The NCAA is the governing body for all collegiate sports in the US. All of its teams are organized into conferences. Conferences used to be geographically-focused, but have since clustered around money and prestige. The 2023 football season will usher in a new era of “realignment” where schools move to new conferences in search of acclaim, national prominence and, most importantly, money.
This erosion of geographic conferences risks undermining traditional rivalries built upon shared history, family ties, in-state bragging rights and more.
